UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs Spivac Main Card Fight Results

Main Event: Serghei Spivac defeats Derrick Lewis by submission (arm-triangle choke) at 3:05 of Round 1

Serghei Spivac is developing into a problem in the heavyweight division.

“The Polar Bear” picked up the biggest win of his career in his first UFC main event assignment, taking the fight to Derrick Lewis from the outset and never allowing the former title challenger a chance to get into the fight. Spivac repeatedly dumped Lewis to the canvas, battering him with heavy blows each time before finally clamping onto a deep arm-triangle choke to secure the finish.

Devin Clark Post-Fight Interview | UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs Spivac
/

Most of the fight was contested in the clinch and in wrestling exchanges, with the two men working hard to gain advantages in tight spaces, slinging big shots, searching for takedowns and head position for much of the 15-minute affair. At no point did either man gain a serious advantage or land anything that really swung the fight in one direction, leading to the verdict being left to the scorecards.

When the tens and nines were tallied, Clark came out on top, putting himself back into the win column to start 2023, while also opening the door for him to welcome a new puppy to the Clark household. | Official Scorecards

Marcin Tybura defeats Blagoy Ivanov by unanimous decision (30-27, 29-28, 29-28)

Marcin Tybura used superior volume and greater diversity to defeat Blagoy Ivanov and collect his second consecutive victory and seventh win in his last eight appearances.

Marcin Tybura Post-Fight Interview | UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs Spivac
/

The European heavyweights ran relatively level in the opening stanza, with Ivanov throwing hammers and Tybura opting for superior output with less on his shots. It was more of the same in the second, with the Polish veteran mixing things up a little more while Ivanov continued looking to land big shots. In the third, Tybura surprised Ivanov by quickly closing the distance and turning to his grappling, spending the duration of the round controlling the action on the canvas.

This was a gruelling, hard-fought veteran effort from Tybura, who remains a formidable stalwart in the middle of the Top 15. With the victory, “Tybur” moves to 24-7 for his career, while Ivanov falls to 19-5 with one No Contest with the loss.| Official Scorecards

Dooho Choi and Kyle Nelson fight to a majority draw (29-27, 28-28, 28-28)

Fighting for the first time since December 2019, “The Korean Superboy” chopped at the lead leg of Nelson in the first and second, compromising the Canadian’s movement and sucking the power out of his shots. While Nelson had positive moments of his own and continued looking to engage and wrestle in the third, there was little damage being done, and Choi eventually managed to work free and close out the fight, roasting the Canadian’s ribs.

Referee Chris Tognoni took a point from Choi for a headbutt while in top position inside Nelson’s guard towards the end of the final round, and it proved pivotal, as the deduction resulted in the fight being scored a draw. | Official Scorecards

Adam Fugitt Post-Fight Interview | UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs Spivac
/

The Pacific Northwest veteran turned to his grappling early, forcing Kinoshita to wrestle and the Japanese Contender Series graduate couldn’t hang with his more experienced opponent. After eventually flatting Kinoshita out on the canvas, Fugitt unloaded a string of heavy elbows that instantly prompted referee Keith Peterson to step in and stop the fight.

Fugitt held his own on short notice in his promotional debut, and turned in a dominant effort here to collect his first UFC victory. | Official Scorecards

Anshul Jubli Octagon Interview | UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs Spivac
/

The 28-year-old “King of Lions” leaned on his grappling advantage, dragging Jeka Saragih to the canvas in both the first and second rounds, climbing into dominant positions and unloading punishment once there. After Saragih escaped in the first, Jubli didn’t allow him a way out in the second, pounding out the finish with a torrent of strikes from top position.

With the victory, Jubli remains undefeated and becomes just the second fighter from India to earn a UFC contract. This was a dominant performance from the now 7-0 lightweight, who did well to play to his advantages and expose the holes in Saragih’s game. | Official Scorecards

Road To UFC Featherweight Final: JeongYeong Lee defeats Yi Zha by split decision (27-30, 29-28, 29-28)

JeongYeong Lee Post-Fight Interview | UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs Spivac
/

After a pair of quick finishes to earn his place in the finals, Lee had to go the distance to get his hand raised and earn the opportunity to compete on the biggest stage going forward. Yi was aggressive early with his takedown attempts, but Lee consistently defended well and stung his Chinese foe at every turn. As the fight progressed, “The Korean Tiger” continued to land the more significant blows, out-landing and out-working the fading Yi through to the final horn.

The 27-year-old runs his winning streak to seven with the victory, and becomes yet another talented fighter to track in the 145-pound weight class. | Official Scorecards

Road To UFC Bantamweight Final: Rinya Nakamura defeats Toshiomi Kazama by knockout (left hand) at 0:33 of Round 1

Rinya Nakamura Post-Fight Interview | UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs Spivac
/

Kazama charged across the cage and looked to crowd Nakamura to start, but it quickly became apparent that the latter was the sharper of the two on the feet, as Nakamura landed a powerful blow that took Kazama off his feet. Both started letting go of their hands and Nakamura continued to land the more telling blows, dropping Kazama with a clean right hand.

Less than 18 months into his professional career, Nakamura is now 7-0, with finishes in six of those contests. He’s a former Under-23 World Champion wrestler and grew up around the sport, so don’t be surprised if he’s able to make an immediate impact in the bantamweight division. | Official Scorecards

HyunSung Park Post-Fight Interview | UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs Spivac
/

After running close to level for much of the first two rounds, Park was the fresher of the two in the third and took the fight to Choi, securing a back waist lock before climbing onto his back and beginning to hunt for the rear-naked choke. Choi defended well and forced Park to adjust, but when they got to the canvas, “Peace of Mind” did the right things, locking up the choke and punching his ticket to the UFC.

Now 8-0 for his career and riding a seven-fight finishing streak, Park is the first South Korean flyweight on the UFC roster, and someone to keep tabs on in the 125-pound weight class.| Official Scorecards

The middleweights started by trading on the feet, neither man gaining a significant advantage. But once Park was able to drag Tiuliulin to the mat and move him off the fence, “The Iron Turtle” turned it up and worked to the finish. Working from mount, he split the Russian veteran open, and when the punishment raining down on him was too great, Tiuliulin gave up his back, and Park sunk in the choke, putting him to sleep.

That’s three straight UFC victories for Park and consecutive submission finishes, who moves to 16-5 overall and 6-1 in his last seven appearances. | Official Scorecards

Tatsuro Taira Post-Fight Interview | UFC Fight Night: Lewis vs Spivac
/

Aguilar raced across the cage and kicked Taira off his feet with his initial low kick, grabbing onto an arm-in guillotine choke as the Japanese prospect scurried to his feet and looked to close the distance. Taira stayed calm throughout, eventually extricating himself from the hold midway through the round before quickly climbing into mount and going on the offensive.

After attacking a mounted triangle choke and rolling through to his back, Taira added a belly-down armbar into the mix, forcing Aguilar to verbally submit in the final minute of the round.

That’s now three straight wins in the UFC for the 23-year-old Japanese flyweight and 13 consecutive victories overall to begin his career. | Official Scorecards
